Biden Ends Tumultuous Year With Mixed Bag

Political Gridlock, Economic Resilience Mark Third Year

Scandals Overshadow Legislative Victories

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden's third year in office was a tale of political gridlock and economic resilience, with his legislative agenda stalled by partisan divisions but the economy defying expectations despite persistent inflation.

Biden sidestepped criminal charges in an investigation into his handling of classified documents, but the probe cast a shadow over his presidency and raised questions about his judgment.

Biden's troubles brought to mind Ronald Reagan's first debate in 1984, where the then 73-year-old president appeared disoriented and out of touch. Biden, who will turn 81 next year, is likely to face those concerns as he weighs a potential rematch with former President Donald Trump in 2024.

Despite the challenges, Biden enters the election year with some favorable poll numbers and a strong economy. His campaign is expected to focus on his infrastructure and healthcare initiatives, as well as the economy.
